There are almost 10,000 tech companies across West Yorkshire alone, and while Leeds has previously been named as a ‘tech-loving superhub of ideas and creativity’, is our region working hard enough to welcome non-graduates to the sector?

We were asked our opinion by Leeds List – the city’s premier website for reviews, ideas and generally interesting content. What we found was, graduates were massively overly-represented in the tech sector, when compared to the general populous. Not a surprising statistic, but what does that mean for equality in education?
In the piece, we mused: “Tech consumes every industry and will continue to do so – we need to ensure that we keep developing the skills needed to match demand. While digital literacy is now a major consideration for every school, there is still far too much inequality. How can a student who doesn’t have access to technology at home hope to enjoy the same chances as one who does?”
As part of Yasper’s ongoing discussions around digital inclusion, our founder and director, Julian Pearce wrote in an article for Leeds List about reinforcing the importance of closing the digital skills gap and why Leeds’s tech sector can only grow and become stronger once we begin to welcome those from a diversity of backgrounds.
