Yasper maps political change coming to West Yorkshire

It’s often easy for businesses to think about political change as something to deal with when it happens and, more often than not, the change seen in local elections has limited impact on day-to-day operations.

However, in May 2026 a rare phenomenon will be sweeping across West Yorkshire, which could see a seismic shift in our town and city halls.

Every council seat is up for election on four out of West Yorkshire’s five districts. While the impact of local elections is often tempered by just a third of seats being up for grabs at a time, polling on 7th May will hit different.

The scale of this potential upheaval is the topic of Yasper’s latest Insight Report: Preparing for Change.

You might wonder why this matters. Well businesses like predictability, and this year, relationships that have solidified with councils and councillors over years or decades could find themselves at risk overnight.

Businesses spend time and effort getting council buy-in to their projects, whether that be taking new developments through planning, or securing council support for projects of regional significance.

In its pages, we look at the five districts of West Yorkshire and their current political makeup. By mapping the current situation, we’re able to see who the winners and losers might be when it comes to May’s vote. Expert analysis accompanies these findings, helping to guide businesses on a path towards preparedness.

There are also regional and national connotations to these council elections. To date, the office of West Yorkshire Mayor has enjoyed largely supportive voices from five Labour-led administrations. But there’s a high likelihood that this will change. New relationships, coalitions and ways of working will have to be formed at a combined authority level, while time will be needed to bring newly elected representatives up to speed on how things work.

The headlines in May will also focus on what this means for the national picture. While important, we are still more than three years out from a general election, therefore the smart money from a business point of view will be spent dealing with the now, not future gazing, however tempting that might be.

These elections are important. Not just for political geeks and policy wonks, but for thousands of businesses across West Yorkshire. Understand the impending change and preparing effectively for the turbulence that is sure to come will put businesses at a competitive advantage.
